Saluzzese is a large area that extends from the foothills of Monviso to the fertile Po valley, the boundaries are the same as the old Marquisate that dominated the area for over 500 years until its annex to the House of Savoy in 1601 formalised by the Treaty of Lyon.
Saluzzo has maintained its historic past and the interesting Medieval centre is well preserved and of great interest. In the surrounding area attractions include: the Abbey at Staffarda, the Manta Castle (a FAI property) and the Royal Palace of Racconigi (the summer residence of the Savoy royal family until 1946).
Ideal for day trips would be a visit to the source of the Po river at the foot of Monviso, the Langhe area where the well known wines of Piedmont are grown and the regional capital of Turin. |
